Bangladesh National Agricultural Policy 2018 prioritizes diversification, commercialization, and mechanization of agriculture as a main goal to transform the sector. Government of Bangladesh’s (GoB) strategic orientations for agriculture and rural development is to promote rural transformation that support agricultural productivity/growth, rural jobs, and poverty reduction in the country. The World Bank is preparing to contribute to analysing the functioning of rural enterprises in agricultural value chain to identify roadblocks to growth and modernization of the sector and provide an enabling environment to boost on-farm income and non-farm job opportunities. The World Bank will redesign its strategies and dialogue for agriculture and rural development in Bangladesh and sharpen priorities for future engagement, including emerging priorities and requests from the GoB on the agriculture sector modernization initiative, and on supporting policies and institutions to promote more and better jobs in the rural non-farm economy. Development Research Initiative (dRi) has been assigned by the World Bank to conduct an Enterprise Survey and produce an analytical report highlighting the major enterprise activities in rural areas. The primary objective of this assignment is to carry out a Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) based Rural Enterprise Survey (RES) to identify opportunities and challenges for agri-businesses and rural enterprises, especially women-owned enterprises, in Bangladesh to support inclusive growth and jobs in the rural areas.
