The Rohingya, an ethnic minority group hailing from Myanmar, have faced severe persecution, discrimination, and violence, leading to their widespread displacement. The world witnessed a humanitarian crisis unfolding in Rakhine State, Myanmar, on August 25, 2017. Hundreds of thousands of terrified Rohingya fled violent attacks, resulting in the destruction of villages. Many sought refuges in neighboring nations, particularly Bangladesh, where they currently reside in overcrowded refugee camps with limited access to essential amenities. The Bangladeshi communities hosting the Rohingya refugees have demonstrated extraordinary generosity by providing shelter and assistance. As of December 31, 2023, there are 971,904 Rohingya living in refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar (939,344 refugees) and Bhasan Char (32,560 refugees), with over half being children.
Caritas Bangladesh, operating from its Emergency Response Program Office in Cox’s Bazar, executed Emergency Appeal (EA) 06/2023 to offer essential support to Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs/Rohingya) and the Host Community (HC) from January 2023 to December 2023. Caritas Bangladesh directly implemented the emergency response program. The evaluation of “2023 Caritas Response to Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN) and Host Community (HC) in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh” focuses on Emergency Appeal 06/2023.
