The Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), hereinafter DCAF, promotes good governance and reform of the security sector. The Centre conducts research on good practices, encourages the development of appropriate norms at the national and international levels, makes policy recommendations and provides in-country advice and assistance programmes. Within the framework of the Canadian Elsie Initiative for Women in Peace Operations that aims to increase the number of women in United Nations peace operations, DCAF undertook a research project – Reducing Barriers for Uniformed Women in UN Peace Operations – for the assessment of barriers at the country level to uniformed women’s participation in United Nations Peace Operations. DCAF, supported by a Lead researcher and local research institutions in eight countries targeted in this project, developed a Barrier Assessment Methodology that was made publicly and freely available, as well as a Barrier Assessment Report, that consists of country-specific reports and a synthesis report, all of which described barriers, and their impact, identified as well as provide recommendation for programmatic and policy changes to reduce the barriers. From Bangladesh, dRi with technical support from and under the overall coordination of the Lead researcher, and within the scope of DCAF’s overall supervision of this project, a) contributed to the development of the Barrier Assessment Methodology (BAM); b) applied the BAM to collect data in Bangladesh c) contributed to the analysis of the data collected d) contributed to the preparation of the Barrier Assessment Report (BAR), in particular as regards the country-specific part of the BAR.
