Stanford University conducted the research study “Sorting in Marriage Markets” to explore how brides and grooms are selected, the roles of guardians, family members, and informal matchmakers in the marriage process, and key aspects of marital practices in Bangladesh. The study examined negotiation and practice of mahr (denmohor), divorce processes, women’s legal and social rights within marriage, as well as decision-making on fertility, family planning, and employment. It aimed to generate a nuanced empirical understanding of marital systems, assortative matching, and gendered decision-making dynamics in the Bangladeshi context. dRi was engaged by the researchers of Stanford University to support the field implementation of the study, including survey instrument preparation, translation, enumerator management, and data collection activities.
