At April’s knowledge-sharing session, our colleague Dip Kunda shared an inspiring story about his ancestors and their remarkable legacy. He spoke about Kundabari’s rich history and its formidable female landlord, Tarangini Debi, who owned vast areas of Mohammadshahi and Mahamudshahi Porgona, Sreepur, Magura.

After her father’s passing, Tarangini Debi fearlessly stepped up to inherit the vast estates. She was a noblewoman of great power and skill, proficient in horse riding, gun shooting, and sword fighting. As a protector of the weak, she never made concessions to oppressors. There are many stories about her bravery, including tales of her engaging in sword fights with robbers. Her bravery and resilience made her a revered figure, respected by all, regardless of caste or religion. Despite the challenges of living in a male-dominated society, Tarangini Debi managed her lands with unwavering courage and determination for an impressive 50 years. Her legacy reminds us of the incredible strength and resilience of women throughout history, and we honor her contributions to her community. The discussions that followed Dip Kunda’s insightful presentation were truly thought-provoking. We appreciate everyone’s active participation, their insights and perspectives enriched the dialogue. We look forward to continuing these conversations in the future and exploring new ideas and perspectives together.
