This study explored contentious politics in the early years of independent Bangladesh, with a particular focus on left-wing groups. While some attention was given to their ideological perspectives, the study delved deeper into the everyday lived experiences within these zones of contention. It aimed to understand not only the activists and supporters of these movements but also the experiences of Awami League supporters and politicians who faced challenging and often risky situations in these areas. Although some of these movements evolved or transformed into criminal organizations, the study’s primary focus remained on the post-independence period. The study employed an ethnographic approach, with fieldwork conducted in four key districts: Dhaka, Rajshahi-Pabna, Kushtia, and Barisal. dRi gathered data using a combination of oral history interviews, document analysis, and archival research.
