The project was a student-led research initiative at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), implemented in Bangladesh with fieldwork and data collection services provided by dRi, and specifically targeting motorbike riders in the gig economy. It focused on understanding the impact of ride-sharing platform algorithms, such as those used by Uber and Pathao, on these riders’ experiences in Dhaka, Bangladesh, examining how algorithmic management influenced their perceptions of autonomy, control, performance monitoring, incentives, privacy, satisfaction, and future intentions to continue working on such platforms. Data collection involved an anonymous, voluntary survey administered in Bengali to active motorbike riders using Uber or Pathao, with participation being entirely optional, supported by a 100 BDT incentive, and designed to ensure complete anonymity without collecting any personal identifiers. The survey captured riders’ subjective views on algorithmic governance in the gig economy, without any affiliation to Uber, Pathao, or other companies, with results intended for academic or professional dissemination in aggregated, anonymized form.
