Labour migration plays a vital role in Bangladesh’s economy and livelihood strategies, with over 10 million migrants working abroad. Despite 2.2 million youth entering the job market annually, domestic employment is limited, prompting many to seek opportunities overseas. In 2024, remittances reached $26.9 billion, emphasizing their growing importance. However, many migrants lack awareness about safe migration, making them vulnerable to irregular migration and trafficking. Between 2015 and 2021, Bangladesh was among the top 10 countries for irregular sea arrivals in Europe (UNHCR). To address these issues, the four-year Prottasha II project, funded by the EU and co-financed by BRAC, aimed to improve the sustainable reintegration of returnee migrants and raise awareness about safe migration, irregular migration risks, remittance management, and reintegration. The project targeted over 3.5 million people through community outreach and social media. dRi was engaged to assess progress against the project’s baseline in 75 sub-districts across 15 districts. As part of this assignment, dRi conducted 456 surveys, 9 FGDs, 8 IDIs, 22 KIIs, and 5 biographical case studies to evaluate changes in awareness around safe migration, reintegration, and remittance management.
