The project ‘The Causes and Consequences of the Male Breadwinner Norm in Bangladesh’ was funded by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). This field experiment investigated the causes and implications of the ‘male breadwinner’ norm (MBN) in Bangladesh, where gender gaps in employment and wages persist, and societal norms restrict women’s labor force participation. The study enlisted working couples to participate in short-term job opportunities, testing the impact of two job bundle choices: one that aligned with the MBN and another that challenged it. By examining household bargaining and social image concerns, the research identified policy-relevant drivers of the MBN and its consequences for family dynamics. The findings were shared with policymakers and academic communities globally to inform future interventions.
